Revlon by Marchesa 24k Brocade Review

In Bloglovin' news, I emailed them about the issue I mentioned in my last post, and was pleasantly surprised to receive a very prompt email from them, letting me know that they are having technical issues with followers, but are sorting it out, and are sorry for any inconvenience caused. Normally companies take FOREVER to respond, if they do at all, so it was nice to get a response in such a short amount of time! This is why I like Bloglovin'. So if you're having issues too, know they are working on it.

In nail news, today I have a design for you, though not of my own creation. During my most recent trip to Ulta I picked up a package of Revlon by Marchesa Nail Appliques in pattern 24k Brocade. I was so excited to find them, -Since I couldn't find them anywhere before then.-, and was even more excited to share them with you. Though my high expectations did falter a bit...

Even though it was a very hard decision, and I would have much rather walked out of Ulta with every single pattern, - Though my wallet wouldn't have appreciated it!- I chose 24k Brocade, a teal base with metallic gold damask detailing.

Like most nail applique sets, this one comes with 18 appliques of varying sizes. This set also comes with a weird little spatula thing that I didn't get the point of, and a terrible mini file.
After sizing my nails, I gently buffed them, then cleaned them with some rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt and oil. -Nail polish remover can leave residue.- After that I began the annoying process of applying the appliques.  I first applied them just past my cuticle, then tried to gently smooth them onto the rest of my nails. Then I used the tiny file to buff the remaining applique from my free-edges.
Based on the promises listed on the box, I was hoping for an easy application. Wrong... No matter how gently, or slowly, I applied them, I could not get the appliques to lay flat! They just continued to pucker and bend around the surface of my nails. They also would not stay where I put them! within minutes there was lifting and curling around my cuticles and free-edges.
The box states that these appliques have "UV cured technology that's made to last." I don't know what that means, but I do know that within the very first day of wearing them I already had a chip, and two other nails already had rips and tears!
But I have to admit I am still a sucker for the pattern, and at a distance my nails looked gorgeous.

Sorry, I got a bit picture happy.
I have short, curved nails, so maybe these are better suited for people with long, flat, square nails. Either way, I was disappointed with the application process. Though I was thrilled with the pattern and color. But sadly that cannot make up for the poor application and staying power.
On a more pleasant note, I will say that the pattern itself was very vibrant and pretty, and I did receive many compliments on it. And while the applique itself did chip and split, the pattern never faded.

I still have extra pieces left, so I may try to get my money's worth and use them in some fashion, maybe as an accent nail in a design or something.
I have not given up on nail appliques! I have heard of plenty that have received great reviews from other bloggers, Including the Sally Hansen line. So I may have to give them a try. Though I think I will have to take a pass on the rest of this collection. As a total perfectionist, not being able to get them to lay flat and smooth just makes me crazy, no matter how nice the pattern may be!

Thanks for reading! To check out other reviews I've done click here, and to check out designs I've done myself click here.

Epicare Review*

In between laundry and cleaning up my disaster of an apartment, I decided I would make my first post of 2014! I hope you all had a nice new year, as I mentioned in my last post, mine was spent with a lovely gross head cold... But luckily it's improving!
For my first post of 2014 I wanted to talk about this interesting product I was given to review by the super nice Celine of Nail Polish Canada (I talk about Nail Polish Canada further in this post). It is called Epicare, and it is a "Do it yourself manual threading device."

Epicare threader.

For those of you that don't know, Threading is a form of hair removal where thread is twisted, then rolled, over areas of unwanted hair growth. It is faster than tweezing because it actually removes more hair at once, saving time. Threading is also quite a bit complicated, and I'm sure quite hard to do on your own eyebrows. This device creates the same twisting, rolling motion, but makes it much easier to do.

It looks like a spring, with two pink handles for a strong grip. I was honestly a bit scared of it when I first opened the package! I was worried I would be rolling a painful Slinky on my face!
To use the Epicare threader, all you have to do is just bend it -Like in the picture above.- , then simply roll it over your face. The box says it "Removes unwanted hair from the roots safely and effectively without damaging the skin." So again, quite similar to the actual threading technique and results.
As you can see, the spring twists and rolls just like the threads do in Threading.

I actually received this product two weeks ago, but I am an avid tweezer, so I had to give my eyebrows time to grow out. The horror! I felt like Cousin Itt from the Addams Family!
Anyway, I have never had my eyebrows threaded before, so I was nervous to try Epicare! But it wasn't even bad! It is obviously not meant for shaping, unlike actual Threading, which when done professionally, can be quite precise. But it works great for in between, and above my brows. I don't have any noticeable facial hair, but I could see it working for that as well, since it is faster than tweezing every single hair. And I noticed a bit less redness than when I would wax my brows also. Though there was a slight bit of redness, but me being as pale as I am, a small breeze can turn my face red...

I would advise though, that if you're not a frequent tweezer, threader, or waxer, that you be very careful trying this product. If you don't have a pain tolerance for hair removal methods, this thing hurts! To me, it feels the same as tweezing, just maybe a bit more of a sting if there is more than a few hairs. But I made my brother be a guinea pig, and you would have thought I stabbed him! But like I said, he is not used to hair removal practices. And also, this is meant for small, fine, facial hair, not hairy man arms...
I cleaned up my mother's brows using it also, and she is a waxing fan, and even she agreed that it worked well, and the pain was around the level of tweezing. Though she prefers waxing her brows still.
Personally, I am not fond of waxing, so I didn't mind this product. I would use this to clean up larger spaces around my brows, then use my tweezers for any small hairs, and for shaping.

If you would like to try out the Epicare threader for yourself, you can visit Nailpolishcanada.com if you are a Canadian reader, or Epicarehome.com if you live in the states.

I was really surprised. I was worried this product was going to be like those scary infomercial hair removal products you see on TV at midnight, but I think it worked pretty well, and it didn't rip my eyebrows off, so bonus points!

Thanks for reading!
* This was a PR sample. Even though I was given this product for review, all my thoughts and opinions are honest, true, and my own.

Beauty Box Swatch Vol.1

Eyeshadows Part.1

I recently made an impulse purchase at Ulta -What else is new.- and picked up this awesome beauty box! (Post about that shopping haul here.)
I bought it because it was cute, and also because if I bought it, I could get a gold compact worth $25 for only $10... So the choice was obvious...

Now I know I normally only swatch nail polish on I Heart Nail Art, but I do love make up, and thought it would be fun to branch out. I also wanted to make this little makeup series because I am normally quite subdued with my makeup -Read: Boring.- , So I figure this will make me test out the bolder colors, and maybe give them a try.
I will start with the powder eye shadow. this box comes with four different shadow color palettes, I will be swatching the first one, with is a row of warm browns and nudes, and a row of cool pale pinks.

Swatches under lamp.
Molten: A shimmery charcoal brown. Though it looks almost black on skin. Very opaque, my swatch was created using three swipes. Would make a great contour color.
Brown Sugar: A warm light brown color that looks matte in the pan, but then gets a subtle gloss on skin. This is my favorite shade of this group, I think it would look gorgeous in a smokey eye look.
Camel: A light, matte taupe shade. Very chalky, and hard to apply. As you can see in the swatch it flakes easily. It looks darker on skin than it does in the pan.
Lustre: A golden brown shimmer shade. Very smooth, though a bit sheer. Would look great with Glittering Sand.
Glittering Sand: A shimmery tan shade that has an almost green undertone on skin that I'm not that thrilled about. But it applies smoothly and evenly.
Bone: a very pale tan/cream shade that basically shows almost white on skin. I plan on using it as a highlight under my brow bone, inner corner of my eyes, and on my cupids bow.

Swatches with flash.

I included some swatches on blank white paper, so you could see what the shades look like on their own. As you can see, Bone looks very tan and smooth on a blank surface, but on my skin, it looks pure white and chalky.

Swatches under lamp.
Wide Awake: a pretty bubblegum pink in the pan that is on the chalky side, and washes out on my skin.
Pink: Very original name. :p Pink is very similar to Wide Awake in the pan, just with a brown undertone.
Love: Love I love, pun intended. It is a brighter pink shade, that is still on the neutral side. It's matte, and applies very smoothly.
Hopeless Romantic: A brown based medium pink shade with a slight shimmer. On my skin it looks very glossy, and way more brown than it does in the pan.
Amethyst: a dark, dusty, shimmery pink that I love in the pan, but it sadly doesn't register the same on my skin. It looks way more brown, and the glitter doesn't blend in very well.
After Hours: A violet based dark pink with the slightest hint of shimmer in the pan. Another disappointment when on skin, it just turns into a brownish/purple mess, that frankly looks like a bruise! It still would work as a contour color for a purple smokey eye look.

Swatches with flash.

On a blank surface After Hours still looks very bleh. But Amethyst almost matches how it looks in the pan, and the glitter looks much more vibrant. If only it looked like that on my skin! It's just so pretty!

Final Thoughts:
While I was sad that some shades didn't match up to the pan when I swatched them, I still feel that the shades were really pretty, and most of them were very smooth and easy to apply. For a makeup box this was surprising! Most sets like this are made with very poor makeup, but this one is of really nice quality.
My favorite shades would have to be Amethyst, even though it was a bit of a disappointment, Love, Hopeless Romantic, on my skin more so than in the pan, Brown sugar, and finally Lustre was just so pretty when swatched.
I normally stick to matte shades, but the soft shimmer most of these shadows had started to really grow on me. I never thought I would like the dark Amethyst, but actually making myself swatch it for the blog showed me how pretty it was! Baby steps...

Thanks for reading! I hope you liked my first steps in the world of makeup blogging!
Like I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I plan on making this a series, there are way more shadows to swatch, as well as cream shadows, lipsticks, glosses, and even blushes and bronzers. Hopefully you like it! If your interested in seeing the rest of this series, let me know in the comments.

Skoshbox Review

December 2013:

It's Skoshbox time! When it arrived in my mail box it felt like I received an early Christmas gift. A gift of yummy Japanese snacks and candy.
If you're new to my blog and have no clue what Skoshbox is, I explain it in greater detail here. But basically it is a monthly subscription box that sends interesting Japanese candy and treats right to your door. They also send a special gift, which can be either a traditional Japanese item, or stationary.

Skoshbox!
Either Skoshbox has learned to pack their boxes better, or my mailman hasn't lost his temper yet. Because my snacks were actually intact this month!

Peanut Butter Stick: Wheat rice-cracker in peanut butter flavor.
First up is the peanut butter stick. It is the one wrapped like a Tootsie Roll. It was pretty good, but was kind of boring. It tasted like any peanut butter snack I could buy in the states at my local grocery store.

Yuki No Yado Custard: Rice cracker senbei with custard drizzle.
The two round crackers. After last month's yummy frosted senbei, I was so happy to discover yet another flavored senbei in this box. It was delicious. The senbei crackers always have a salad dressing-like flavor to them, yet they taste surprisingly good when mixed with sweet toppings.

Mini Senbei Mix: Assorted senbei mix.
It doesn't specify what flavors could be in the little bag of mystery. Though they do warn that sea food could be involved. After the whole eel incident, I was quite hesitant, but it wasn't bad. A bit too salty for me though.

Haihain Cracker: Baby's first rice cracker.
The wrapper with the faces and bottles. For some reason I find the wrapper mildly creepy, I don't know why... The crackers also looked like Styrofoam, and tasted like it too. Bleh...

Juicy Fruit Candy: Peach, grape, apple, orange, and yuzu.
I have no clue what yuzu is. But I received orange and peach, and they were amazing! I am not a fan of candy, but they were so flavorful, and really tasted like fruit. Not artificial at all.

Mini Baum Roll: Snack sized classic baum cakes. Matcha or cream.
Luckily Skoshbox was kind to me and gave me matcha! I'm at the point where I am obsessed with anything that has matcha in it. It is just so good! This roll was a bit dry, but other than that it was quite good.

Bakauke Senbei: In curry, cheese, nori, sweet soy, or sesame seed.
It is the one that kind of looks like sweet potato fries, with the creepy potato man on it.
I couldn't for the life of me pronounce the name, or figure out what flavor I had. Whatever it was, I wasn't a fan.

Cheese Almond: Rice cracker topped with cheese cream and almond.
I don't know if cheese cream is basically just cream cheese. But I don't care, because this was very good. It looked like it should be served on a platter at a dinner party or something. Yummy and pretty.

Strawberry Kitkat: This needs no introduction! I have been dying to try a strawberry Kitkat ever since I heard they existed on this planet! And finally I got to. I was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype I built up in my head, but it did. It tasted like a strawberry milkshake. SO good.

Careme Soft Cookie: Chewy cookies in milk or chocolate.
I would have loved to have tried the chocolate one, but the milk cookie was really good. It was like a Fig Newton, minus the fig.

And finally my surprise gift!
Kami Fuusen: Traditional paper balloon. Inflate gently and have fun!
I'm surprised that as I write this, this balloon still exists. Between my dog, cats, and hyperactive ferret, this thing should have been destroyed the second I opened it. But It's still in one piece, and I love it. I would like to find a way to turn it into something decorative for my bedroom, but I haven't figured that out yet.

Thanks for reading! To check out other Japanese snacks I've received in my previous Skoshboxes click here.

Dot's Make Up Wipes Review

I know, I know, this post is late! But yesterday was just... Bleh. While going to get my driving permit - Yes, late to the party I know, but I just got my first car, so better late than never. - I discovered I was blind when I failed the eye test. Of course I knew my vision wasn't the best, but after going to get some glasses, I learned that I am quite visually impaired! Weirdly enough, my right eye is worse than my left eye. But now I have some glasses, and my permit. So it was a long day, but a good one too.
Anyway! Now I am here, and it is time to review a product I bought last month. I waited to review it so I could see the long term effects, and give a more comprehensive review.

Dot's makeup wipes - $3
Before I start, I want to say that while I work for the Dot's company, I am still giving my full, honest, opinions. This is new to my store, and everyone there was really curious on how well they worked. So, knowing that I have a blog, someone suggested I review them. I was not given them, I bought them with my own money. Hopefully you won't think I'm biased.

My store sells these in 25 sheet packets. While that doesn't seem like a lot, at only $3 per pack, I think that's a pretty good price. I've been pricing makeup wipes at my local drugstore for a while, but could never get past the price tags. $15 for wet wipes seems a bit steep to me...
I wanted to try these wipes out not just because of the price, but also because I usually work the closing shift, and when I get home I've been known to sleep with my makeup still on. GASP! I know, that's really bad, but I'm tired! So I figured I would test these wipes out, and simultaneously save my poor skin.

Now for my opinions!
I like the packaging, I'm a sucker for zebra. I also like the size, it's small enough to keep on my bedside table for when I'm feeling lazy. I also like that it's resealable, and means it. The cover actually stays closed, even after being opened countless times.
The wipes themselves are pretty scentless, which I prefer. I hate overly fragranced products. I don't want my face to smell like I fell into a vat of perfume.
The true test was obviously the actual make up removal. While the wipes had a bit of trouble removing my layers of mascara, they did remove my foundation, concealer, and all the other products I put on my face on a daily basis. My face felt clean, and my skin didn't get that tight feeling some products leave behind.
One thing I did notice though, was that after a while I started getting a couple dry patches by my chin. I already have dry skin, and this product is a tad drying. But most products are to me. Very rarely can I find a product that isn't drying.

Ingredients:
Water, glycerin, aloe vera gel, vitamin E acetate, benzalkonium chloride, fragrance, bronopol.
Even though ingredient list says fragrance, I really couldn't smell anything, which works for me!

Overall, I like the price, the packaging, and the results. I would just be careful if you have dry skin like me, and not use them every night. Also make sure to apply some moisturizer after use.
Because of my dry skin, I try to only use them after work, or if I'm not feeling well and the trip to my bathroom sink sounds like a trip to Mordor.

Thanks for reading! I hoped you liked my latest review, to check out my previous reviews click here.

Skoshbox Review

November 2013

Today I decided to break away from my busy schedule of sitting and drinking Dunkin' Donuts eggnog latte's, to bring you yet another Skoshbox review! If you are not sure what Skoshbox is, check out my first review (here), where I go into further detail. But basically it's a monthly subscription box that sends me snacks and candy from Japan.
Now let's see what I got this month! -Like always, I made my mother and brother try everything too, so I will share their thoughts and feelings also.-

Sidenote: I wasn't kidding about the eggnog latte's. I've already had three in three days... I might have a problem... But who cares! They're just too yummy!

This month's box was pretty good. Nothing was really broken upon delivery, and most of the snacks were pretty tasty. I say most because of one unpleasant surprise snack I was not keen on trying. - Hint, it's the gold wrapped one in the above picture.-

First up is Pretz Salad: Biscuit sticks lightly dusted with seasoning.
Pretty good. It has a very zesty salad dressing flavor, with the texture of a cracker. I liked the savory flavor. They look like thin crunchy french fries. I don't think I could eat them everyday, but they would be a good "once in a while" snack.
Sakuma Drops: The iconic hard candy that's featured in "Grave of the Fireflies".
I have no clue what "Grave of the Fireflies" is, but the candy tasted like cough drops. They are also oddly sticky, they stuck to my teeth -Ew.-. They had a slightly fruity scent, but I could not pinpoint what kind of fruit. No flavor at all. Just bleh. Also my flavor processing was hindered at this point because I had just tried the item in the gold wrapper I mentioned earlier, and I was still a bit shaken up...
Fujiya Lollipop: The original fruit version of the soda pops in our previous boxes.
I hated the soda pops, so I had no faith in this lollipop being good. Frankly it tasted like a cough drop -Again, do they think I have a cold or something?-, with no fruit flavor what-so-ever. Only my brother liked this one.

Yakiniku/Unagi Strips: Jerky strips in grilled eel or beef flavors. Freaked out?
Yes, yes Skoshbox I was freaked out! Of course I received the eel flavor...bleh... The second I opened the package all I could smell was the strong scent of dead fish. Disgusting. I was quite nauseated. I tried the smallest bit and it nearly brought up my lunch. -Sorry for being too descriptive, but no words can explain how gross this was to me.- My mother wasn't having it, and would not even try it. I don't blame her... My brother ate it, and said he thought it wasn't bad... NO.
Yuki No Yado Senbei: Light fluffy rice crackers drizzled in sweet frosting.
I love Skoshbox's Senbei crackers, and I love frosting, so this was an obvious win. It still had the slight salad dressing flavor of the past senbei crackers, just mixed with frosting. Weird yes, but super yummy. I loved the mix of sweet and tangy. It's like if you mixed Italian dressing with toaster strudel frosting... OK, it sounds gross, but I swear it was delicious. Everyone involved was a fan.
Bisco Snack: In original or strawberry, a kids snack because of its softness.
While the package creeped me out - Why is there a disembodied face on it?-, it was pretty good. I loved the scent of strawberry. and the wafer texture was nice. My mother and brother thought it tasted like a less artificial strawberry Poptart. But to me, the strawberry flavor was more similar to a strawberry milkshake.

Fruit Gummies: In orange or grape. Firm, chewy, and full of flavor.
I received the grape flavor. I am not a fan of gummy candy, but I gave it a shot... I am still not a fan of gummy candy... It smelled like kid's grape flavored cough syrup, and I couldn't get past the odd mushy texture. My brother loved them, of course. My mother wouldn't try them, and again, I do not blame her. -She has good judgement.-
Choco Pie: Cake with marshmallow filling and chocolate coating.
The second I read chocolate, I knew I would like this one. And, what do you know?! I loved it. It tasted like those Pinwheel dessert snacks. And the cake was very similar in texture to a Hostess cake. Everyone loved it, but I feel it is just too similar to desserts I can get in the states to be too interested in it. I want to try snacks I Can't get in the states!
Hanatsumi Jelly: Kanten jelly candy, firm and mildly fruity/sweet.
I unfortunately cannot share my snarky comments for this item, because I did not receive it! So I will never know if I would have liked it or not. But frankly, seeing that I am not a big fan of "jelly" candy, -Jelly nail polish on the other hand? Yes please!- I would say probably not...

And finally, my stationary gift!
Origami: The art of folding paper into beautiful objects like flowers, animals, and boxes.
I love the cute little animals on the cover. -I love packages in Japan! Everything is so colorful, with cute little characters on it.- But the instructions on the back were impossible! It was like I was trying to build a laser or something! But if you follow me on Istagram - Link on the right.- Then you saw I have already showed off a crane I made using the paper - Thanks YouTube!-.

All in all, I think while I have had better boxes in the past, this box was really good, and I enjoyed most of the snacks and candy I was given. Just next time, I will skip over anything with the word eel in it...

Thanks for reading! To check out my previous Skoshbox reviews, click here.
-Brittany

If I had to pick a favorite snack from this month's box, I'd pick the Bisco Snack, I love the strawberry milkshake flavor. What snack would you like to try from this month's box? Let me know in the comments below!

Nail Art Brush Collection & Review

Hello! I have been working quite a bit lately, but I've managed to budget my time enough to be able to write a post before I head out to work today. Yay!
For this post, I thought I would share my brush collection, as well as review them for you. If you're just starting out doing nail designs it's always good to invest in a good set of brushes. While some polishes now come with thin nail art brushes built in, they are usually more expensive, or they come in a limited assortment of colors. By having your own set of brushes, you have your choice of any polish to design with! Or, if your into using acrylic paint -I am not, but to each their own.-, you can use them for paint as well.

My brush collection.
Set of 4 brushes from Sally's  - $12
My very first set of brushes I bought were from Sally's beauty supply. They were a bit expensive at $12, but I was running out of time and I needed them for school. I love the floral design on them, but as you can see, the constant cleaning of them has worn the floral decal away.

This set comes with four brushes: Two striping brushes, a detail brush, and a small squared brush.
I would not recommend this set. I am not really a fan of products from Sally's, but as I said, I was in a time crunch. The set was over priced, and frankly low quality. The brushes started to fray out quite quickly after purchase, and the floral decals wore away near the ferrules immediately. I honestly only use these brushes when I'm too lazy to clean my good brushes.

15 piece brush set from Amazon - $2.
It is so funny that I think the $2 set I own is better, and higher quality, than the $12 set from an actual beauty supply company. But it's true!
I love this set, not only because they only cost $2, but also because the brushes are really great to work with.
This set includes:

Three striping brushes in varying lengths. Yes, I didn't get to clean them before their photo shoot, sorry! If there wasn't polish caked on them you would be able to see that they have not frayed quite as much as the Sally's brushes.

Three detail brushes. No I didn't have a Hulk moment and bend that one. It actually comes that way to make it more comfortable when doing fine detail work. It is one of my favorites, as you can tell by how frayed it is becoming. I've had these brushes for almost two years now, so I think I will have to get a new set soon.

The set also includes another two detail brushes, three squared brushes, and an angled clean up brush I use with polish remover to clean up around my cuticles after my designs are finished. I don't use the squared brushes often, that's why they look so neat and clean, but when I do they hold the polish well, and are soft and pliable. As you can see, the white coating on one of them has been eaten away a bit from polish remover. Though not as badly as the other set thanks to the long ferrules.

And finally, the set includes two fan brushes. I haven't used them yet, as you can see by how nice they look. I kind of don't want to, just because they are so pretty! :p Though I think I will have to soon, since I have some feathered looks I would like to try. They are also wicked soft, so when I do use them, I already know they are going to be very nice and pliable.

Another great thing about my white set of brushes is that they came with not only a long, fine dotting tool, but it came with a 4 piece set of different sized dotting tools! I have eight here because I already had a set I bought from Amazon for only a few dollars.

Dotting tools are a great thing to have in your collection! I use them for very fine detail work, and obviously, polka dots and accent dots. The ones I have are actually double sided, so it's like having 16 tools. They also come in varying sizes so you can make different sized dots based on the look your going for. A great thing about dotting tools is that they are way easier to clean than brushes because of the coated plastic and metal.

So that is my brush collection! If your looking for a nice set of brushes I would recommend going to Amazon and picking up the 15 set white handled brushes, and skipping Sally's set. They are not worth the money whats-so-ever.

If your curious on how I clean my brushes, I use pure acetone polish remover, dip the brushes in a cup of it, then I wipe them off, rinse them in water, and then dry them on their side on a paper towel. Just know that because acetone is so strong, it will eventually erode the brushes, but diluted polish remover is just too weak to really clean them. That's why it is best, if your going to use acetone, to buy brushes that are good quality, but also inexpensive enough to replace easily. Again, I only paid $2 for my white handled brushes and I've had them for almost two years, and they are still going strong!

Thanks for reading!
