Tutorial Thursday: Pink Checkers Stripe

Hey everyone! Because this week's Tutorial Tuesday was done by the lovely Amelia (see here), I decided I'd post my usual tutorial today instead! I'm so excited to show you this design, after seeing this image by Madeline Poole on Instagram I just knew I had to recreate it. The design itself is pretty simple but I think the simplicity is what makes it stand out so much. I definitely got a lot of comments on my nails whilst I was wearing these, and as they're so easy to do I think I'll be recreating them with quite a few colours!

I didn't actually intend to do this design in pink, I had meant to do it with a nude base, but for some reason I picked up the pink and painted my nails with it without even thinking, and I didn't want to remove it after that so I just decided to go with it. I'm so glad I did because I think it works really well with the pastel colour. I guess my hand knew what I wanted more than my head! Tutorial will be after the jump.

The base for these nails is OPI - Mod About You, then I used striping tape from Born Pretty Store, MASH - White, and MASH - Black, but you can also use acrylic paint if you'd prefer! Then I finished off with a coat of Seche Vite

Step 1: Paint your nails with your chosen base colour
Step 2: Apply two strips of striping tape to the centre of your nail
Step 3: Paint in between the strips with the brush from the white polish
Step 4: Using a small brush and black nail polish or acrylic paint, paint on the black stripes leaving equal gaps for the white. You can either do this step with or without the striping tape
Step 5: Remove the striping tape. If you left the tape on when applying the black, do this very quickly or the black will be stringy and will ruin the design.
Step 6: Once your design is dry, finish off with topcoat to seal in your design.

Candy Canes and Holly Berries - Holiday Christmas Nail Art

Hello lovelies! Can you believe it's already less than a week until Christmas?? I feel like it was just last week that it was months and months from Christmas. Still, the Christmas spirit seems to have hit me hard ... well, hit me with nail art ideas because my house still isn't decorated and I have done less than no Christmas shopping.

And speaking of nail art ideas ... I think I'm a little obsessed with candy cane stripes. I seriously just want to keep these on until after Christmas; I love them so much!

These are actually really simple to do but there's a lot of waiting involved because the stripes are done with tape and the white polish has to be completely dry before you can start. If you don't wait for it to dry it will dent if you're lucky or ruin all your work at worst.

I think I'm also developing an obsession with OPI The Spy Who Loved Me. It is such a lovely shade of shimmery red and has such wonderful coverage. It also makes perfect candy cane stripes ... and holly berries!

Well, I think that's just about it. I hope you enjoyed yet another of my Christmas manis. :)

Until next time,
- Ashley

*A huge congratulations to Ariel of Lacquer: The Best Medicine for winning my Season of Giving Giveaway!! Her prize is already in the mail. :)

Digital Dozen Does Fashion: Day 5

Hey everyone! Today I have the final post of the digital dozen does fashion week today, albeit a day late. It was inspired again by a La Moda bag, this* one, which is currently on sale!

For these I used a base of Barry M - Green Berry, and Barry M Gold Foil Special Effects, then I used striping tape from MASH and MASH Black polish. Then I used drops of Seche Vite to add the studs, and then topped off all nails with Seche Vite.

Digital Dozen Does Fashion: Day 1

Hey everyone! I'm back with another week of digital dozen posts for you. I unfortunately missed July but hopefully I'll be able to keep up with this week's post. I've just started a new job though so I might dwindle later in the week but we shall see. I apologise in advance if that does happen!

So for the first day I'm bringing you some nails inspired by this* gorgeous La Moda satchel. I'm going to put the rest of this post after the jump because it's going to be a pretty long on.

Inside of the satchel
This design was inspired loosely by the inside of the satchel. I decided to do simplified butterflies on a yellow outlined background. I know the yellow polish I chose is a bit off the satchel colour, but in my 400+ polishes I couldn't find one that matched more. I clearly need to buy more polish!

To do this design I started off with a base of Barry M - Yellow, then I used MASH - Black* for the outline, done with a thin brush, and for the butterflies. The white is acrylic paint. This was topped off with a coat of Seche Vite, followed by a coat of Butter LONDON Matte Top Coat.

I also did another design based on this bag, before I decided that I didn't particularly like it. However, as I spent the time doing it and editing it I thought I may as well show you it and you can decide for yourself!

For these nails I started with a base of Butter LONDON Cuppa, and Butter LONDON Jasper, and then I used striping tape and MASH - Black, which I also used alongside a thin brush for the butterflies.

Which design do you prefer? And what do you think of the bag? You can shop it here

Stripes, Lovehearts, and a Sprinkle of Glitter

Evening! This is my second post of the day... What is wrong with me?! Anyway, I was so impressed with my new Jacava nail polishes (see the review here), that I couldn't help but do some nail art. I kept my 'Mont Blanc' swatches as a base, and decided to add stripes, hearts and sparkles to create a pretty glittery manicure.
The equipment:

Jacava 'Mont Blanc'*
Essie 'Sweet Talker'
Jacava 'Chillax'*
Elf 'Dream Maker'
Essie 'Good To Go'
Scotch tape
Scissors
Fine nail art paint brush
I normally use narrow striping tape to create stripes, however this time I wanted a thicker effect. I used 'Magic Tape' (scotch tape) instead, and carefully cut it down to a thickness of about 3mm. My base is 'Mont Blanc', and it had been dry for quite a few hours, so there was no risk of smudges. To make sure the tape wasn't too sticky (sometimes fresh tape can remove even the driest of nail polishes!) I pressed it on the back of my hand a few times, then applied to my thumb nail, middle finger nail and little finger nail.
When my tape was applied, I used Essie 'Sweet Talker' over the top. After a few seconds, I removed each piece of tape. Then I topped with Essie 'Good To Go', which is a rapid drying top coat.
Next, using 'Chillax' and a fine paint brush, I painted small turquoise hearts on my plain white fingers. To form the hearts I applied two dots and a small triangle on top, then carefully blended the shapes together. Always start off small with hearts, and then you can build them up and neaten as you go.
I loved the turquoise hearts so I added large ones to my stripy nails. I formed these in exactly the same way as the small ones: two blobs, a triangle above, and then gradually linking them together. For all of my hearts I added two coats as I wanted them to really stand out.
I really liked the final effect, but I thought it needed something extra. So I grabbed one of my new e.l.f. glitters, 'Dream Maker', and applied it onto the large turquoise hearts and across all of the small heart nails. I didn't let any large glitters escape onto the small heart nails - it would have been too overpowering. On the large hearts though, I made sure to add quite a few big bits of glitter, which took a little bit of patience!
As always, I topped off my manicure with a good top coat. I like how they're a combination of different styles - they're a little bit romantic, a little bit nautical, a little bit sparkly, and very cute! What do you think?

Monochrome Nails: 5 Simple Nail Art Techniques

Hey everyone. Apologies for being such a rubbish blogger recently - my dissertation is taking over my life! I managed to squeeze in a little bit of nail art this morning, but I'm afraid it's nothing special. I decided to do mix-and-match nails of a few different nail art techniques, and I chose black and white polish to keep it simple. All of these designs were achieved by using basic tools, so if you fancy having a go at any of them, make sure you keep reading :)
The equipment:

Natural Collection 'White'
W7 'Black'
Fine nail art paint brush
Striping tape
Dotting tool
Essie 'Good To Go' top coat

So on my thumb nail I created basic stripes. To do this, I applied a base of white, and once dry I added striping tape. Then I painted black over the top, and after waiting for a few seconds, I removed the tape. I used to wait agesssss for the second coat of nail polish to dry, but then I realised that this caused it to pull and rip. Similarly, not waiting long enough causes the second coat to bleed into the first. So the best thing to do is wait until the polish is tacky rather than runny, and remove the tape very carefully. Obviously practise makes perfect, and it all depends completely on the type of striping tape and nail polish that you use!

On my index finger I added black polkadots to a white base. I used one of my largest dotting tools to do this, and tried to ensure that each dot was the same size and shape. On my middle finger I created chevrons, which I also used striping tape for (but freehanded with my fine paint brush to clean up any suspicious looking areas!) On my ring finger I added a chessboard, and finally on my little finger a curved, fan pattern. (I don't know the proper term for this sort of design?)
I finished off each of my designs with a clear top coat. Essie 'Good To Go' is my current favourite because it's rapid drying, although I've found that on top of cheap polishes (Sinful Colors, W7, for example) it tends to shrink. I think I might add a mattifying coat to these too, although that's always risky because matte polish is VERY unforgiving of mistakes! What do you think? What's your favourite simple nail art technique?

Patriotic Drips Nail Art Tutorial

Hello everyone!! It's been forever since I posted anything. I knew running a nail polish business was going to take time, but I guess I never realized just how much of my blogging time it would eat into. I'm working really hard to keep up with orders, restocks, and developing new releases. Any free time I manage to grasp is spent storing up nail art and swatches so I can start posting again - hopefully within the next few months.

My patriotic nail art has been getting a ton of stardom lately. My nails can even be found in the July issue of People StyleWatch magazine! If you don't have a subscription to this magazine I recommend getting one. It's one of the best magazines I've read in a long time! I didn't have to search and skim, skipping large portions of the magazine, because every page had something interesting to me.

Now, onto the nails!!! With all that interest for my patriotic nails I decided to try something different. I won't claim that I created this - someone, somewhere has probably done this before - but I will say it is something I have never seen before! I would love to see your nails if you decide to try the tutorial, so don't be scared to send them to me. I don't bite. Promise!! :)

That's it for now. For those who don't follow me on Facebook but enjoy my polish I will be having a big restock, complete with a ton of NEW polishes and the return of those sold out polishes some of you may be waiting for! Head over to my Etsy shop tomorrow to see what I've come up with. Hope to see ya there. :)

Then and Now: Lilac Roses

Hey everyone! I'm back (finally) with a new then and now post. I know a lot of you said in the comments of my giveaway that you'd like to see a few more then and now posts so I thought I'd bring it back. Although, I wont be doing it every week like before, just when I feel like it. This week I'm redoing a stripes and roses combination that a few of you may remember as it was probably around a year ago that I did it, in fact you can actually see it on my blog here, but the difference in nail size is huge. I actually cut my nails a bit too short this time around, so the difference is even bigger than it should have been, but oh well! As always the 'then' picture will be after the jump.

Look at the length of those nails! I can hardly believe it's the same hand.

I completely forgot to add polka dots to the rose nails and I really wish I had because I think they really add to the design.

This time I started with a base of Barry M - Berry Ice Cream and used striping tape along with MASH - white, rather than freehanding the stripes like before. I got the idea to use tape here from The Nailasaurus. In fact I got the idea to recreate this design from her because I really wanted to try it out using tape. The roses are Barry M - Passion Fruit and Barry M - Bright Pink, with Barry M - Key Lime, all topped off with a coat of my favourite top coat in the world, Seche Vite

Stripes & Floral Combo Nails

Hey guys! Today I bring you a tutorial for a manicure that stemmed from a brand new outfit I've just bought. I created this design for a variety of reasons, including seeing Lacqueerisa's 'Little Poppies' which made me desperate to try a new floral mani. And then when my gorgeous outfit from Boohoo arrived, it seemed the perfect source of inspiration to create a funky floral design!

*Images sourced via boohoo.com

This is the outfit that I bought. The top is only £8 and is a really on-trend 'bardot' style - it's cropped, but not TOO short, and has a cute off-the-shoulder feature. If you're searching for the perfect crop-top that doesn't show off too much skin, then you can find it here! When I ordered the skirt it was £10, but now it's only £8 in the sale. It fits like a glove and the fabric is lovely and soft, so if you are currently looking for a new maxi, then I highly recommend this one :) It can be found here!

Anyway, let's get started with the tutorial! As always, here's a list of the stuff I used...

The equipment:

W7 'Black'
Models Own 'Bare Beauty'
Natural Collection 'White'
Models Own 'Pastel Pink'
Barry M 'Shocking Pink'
W7 'Neon Green'
Missguided 'Misslead'
Rio silver/gold nail art pen
Striping tape
Fine nail art paint brush
Essie 'Matte About You'
So I started out with my bases, applying black to my thumb nail, middle finger nail and little finger nail. On the other two I used Models Own 'Bare Beauty', which is the closest shade I have to skin tone, and is supposed to represent the hint of belly that is on show in my top!
Next, using my fine nail art paint brush and white varnish, I painted on the bases of flowers. I thought it best to do it in white prior to adding colour, as even the most opaque of varnishes struggle on top of a black base!
Then I used Models Own 'Pastel Pink' for the flower petals, and then tried to blend in Barry M 'Shocking Pink' in the centre of the flower. For the leaves, I used W7 'Neon Green', which took quite a few coats to achieve a decent finish as W7 polishes are quite transparent and have a very loose consistency.
I neatened up the edges of the flowers and leaves with black polish, then topped the leaves with Missguided 'Misslead' (shimmery yellow), and while I waited for them to dry I applied striping tape to my flesh-coloured nails. I made sure to space it out so that all sections were the same size.
I painted in the black sections on the taped nails, and while they dried I outlined the floral design with a Rio nail art pen. The pen is a sort of gold-ish silver, and I think it really completes the design as well as adding a bit of shimmer! When my striped nails were dry, I removed the tape carefully. Initially my manicure had a shiny finish, but I decided to top them off with Essie 'Matte About You', as you can see in the first picture. I think the mattified effect is especially effective on the striped nails, and I think I'll definitely do a full mani of this in the future!
So here are my nails along with my outfit! As you can see, the crop top only reveals a centimetre or two of my waist, which ensures that it's comfortable to wear as well as being on-trend. I really love this manicure - I've never 'mixed and matched' before, and I think it's definitely something I'll try again! What do you think?

Butter LONDON Marbs - Review and Nail Art

Hey everyone! Today I have a quick review of Butter LONDON 'Marbs'* from Butter LONDON's new Summer Holiday 2013 collection. It's a lovely gold with a hint of silver in it as you shall see. I couldnt resist creating a bit of nail art for you too using my new Orly Dotting Tool* and Orly Striping Brush* that I received from HQhair (a deceiving name considering they also sell nail products too).

I originally tried to create a design with dots and triangles together on the alternative nails but it looked overcrowded so I ended up redoing it. I used the striping brush for the triangles and touched it up with the dotting tool. For the ring and pointer finger I used striping tape. The black is China Glaze - Liquid Leather

For me the striper was too long to use as it was so I cut it down, but once I had it worked brilliantly.

This was just one coat of Marbs* with no top coat, it's ridiculously opaque and it looks brill!

What do you think? Will you be buying Marbs? You can get it here on lookfantastic.com for £12 with free postage worldwide! You can also get the striper here and the dotting tool here on HQhair.com for £7 each, again with free shipping worldwide, and I'd definitely recommend them!

Also, my giveaway is now over so dont forget to check your emails to see if you've won!

Stripes and Dots

Today's mani came to me in a dream. No, seriously, I woke up with the idea so I must have dreamed it. And it looks really awesome in my opinion.

What do you think? I'm reminded slightly of Doctor Who Dalek. The stripes on the side don't fit a Dalek, but the resemblance is there.

I started with two coats of OPI Strawberry Margarita from the OPI Best of the Best mini collection. Strawberry Margarita is originally from the Beach Party Collection, and I can see why. It's such a yummy bright pink — perfect for the beach.

Spellbound Nails Nail Lacquer Stripes Dots Born Pretty Store metal studs rhinestones black tape taped taping hot pink bright OPI Strawberry Margarita Beach Party Best of the Best mini collection Doctor Who Dalek freehand Petites Night color swatch Seche Vite top coat

I used tape to create the thin lines up and down on either side and filled them in with Petites Black. Then I used a nail art brush to create the thicker stripes across. You could also do this with tape, but I found it faster, if less neat and precise, to freehand them.

Spellbound Nails Nail Lacquer Stripes Dots Born Pretty Store metal studs rhinestones black tape taped taping hot pink bright OPI Strawberry Margarita Beach Party Best of the Best mini collection Doctor Who Dalek freehand Petites Night color swatch Seche Vite top coat

I added a coat of Seche Vite and thought it looked bare. It needed something, so I dug out my Born Pretty Store studs. I vowed to use these more often and this was the perfect opportunity. I decided on the black studs. I've never found the perfect mani for these so I've never used them before! Exciting!!

The best way I've found to use these types of studs is to lay them on your nail over dry polish first so you can get the perfect spacing and positioning. Then pick them up one by one with tweezers and lightly dip the bottom in clear polish and set them back down. It gives you more leeway as you can decide you don't like the design and move them around. You can't do this if you just pick them up and slap them on wet polish. There's no changing your mind after that! I really hope this tip helps someone. :)
