Book Nook

Vol. 2

(You can read Vol. 1 here.)

It's that time again! Time to show what books I will be reading in the coming weeks. I went a little crazy this time. I ordered a couple of books from a different library, and they came in sooner than I expected. So I have a lot of reading to do.

First is Cinnamon Roll Murder, by Joanne Fluke.
Cinnamon Roll Murder.
I mentioned reading one of her books, Red Velvet Cupcake Murder, last post. I enjoyed it, so I decided to try out another one of her novels. This one is also all about baking and murder. Two things you never expect to work so well together. I actually already finished this one, but I'll save my review until my next Book Nook post.

Murder in Our Midst.
This one is so old it doesn't even have a dust jacket anymore! I have no clue what it's about. I only know it's an Agatha Christie murder mystery.-You may have noticed by now that I enjoy a good murder mystery.- I actually like that I don't know the plot, it's a mystery in itself. Plus, it's Agatha Christie! She's never made a book I didn't like. -Except when Hercule Poirot died in Curtain, that was depressing. Though, I still loved that book.-
Murder at Hazelmoor.
Another Agatha Christie murder mystery! I just can't help myself, I love her! This one's about murder, and possibly ghosts if the dust jacket is to be believed.
Bryant and May Off the Rails.
This is one of the books I special ordered. I've read two other Christopher Fowler Bryant & May novels, and really loved them, so I needed to read more of them. Again, it involves murders and mysterys-I may have a problem.-, but it also is really funny. If you enjoy more macabre humor, you'll like these novels.
The Victoria Vanishes.
This is the other book I special ordered. It is also a Christopher Fowler novel, also involving his characters Bryant & May. They run a police unit in England, specializing in unusual and peculiar crimes. And yes, you guessed it, Murders. Oh my god, I need to read some nice, sweet, peaceful novels soon, or I might as well become a criminologist at this point!

Book Nook Vol. 1 Reviews

To learn more about these novels, check out Vol. 1 here.
I am by no means a book critic. But I still wanted to share my opinions on the other books I've read recently. I figure I'll write a brief synopsis of my opinions, and then rate them 1-5.

Red Velvet Cupcake Murder, By Joanne Fluke.
This was my first time reading her work. I really liked the characters, they were funny and believable. And the story was interesting and had a satisfying ending. I also loved the included recipes for everything baked by the main characters. The only grievance was with some of the writing. It felt a bit stilted at times, and some of the things the characters said were either way too repetitive, or just not believable as real conversations. Because of this I sometimes was taken out of the story. Luckily, this didn't happen that often, so I still enjoyed it. 3-5.

Miss Marple the Complete Short Stories by Agatha Christie.
Miss Marple? Check. Agatha Christie? Check. I'm happy.
There were a few stories I had already read, but that's the great thing about her writing, most stories can be re-read and still be enjoyable. 4-5

The Mirror Cracked by Agatha Christie.
Another Miss Marple mystery. I was afraid I had already read it, and discovered I indeed had. But, as I just mentioned, most of her novels are so enjoyable that I can read them multiple times. That is what I look for when I decide I want to buy one of the novels I borrow. I would buy this novel, and probably will. 4-5.

Thanks for reading!
What books are you reading? Would you read any of these novels?

Book Nook Recipes

Butterbeer

You can read my most recent Book Nook Recipe Pink Lemonade Cookies here.

An extra blog post, omg! I had to make an extra post today to share this awesome recipe I made yesterday. Butterbeer! I would hope there are some Harry Potter fans reading this who know what I'm talking about. Just in case, Butterbeer is a drink from the Harry Potter book series. It was a favorite of all the main characters and intoxicated house-elves.
I found this recipe during my nightly pinning fest on Pinterest. I stumbled across it while pinning my fantasy wardrobe and decor.
I first started reading the Harry Potter series in my early teens, and have re-read them countless times, so I knew I had to try it. There are a lot of recipes for this online, but this was the easiest one, with the fewest ingredients.
I take no ownership or credit for this recipe.

Ingredients.
You will need:
-You can use any brand of items, this was just what I picked out at the store. Though I would recommend the Polar cream soda. It's really good.-
Vanilla ice cream.
Butterscotch syrup.
Cream soda.
Blender.
Sorry! No real beer. A total misnomer. Only people getting drunk off this are house-elves.
Blending.
Now, the recipe used all of the ingredients. I don't know if it was for a party, or this person just really loves Butterbeer. Either way, I had to alter the quantities. I just winged it based on how many people I was serving. So if you try it, I'd say just eyeball it, it's going to taste awesome anyway.

After blending.
Yummy!
The recipe suggests adding whipped cream on top, I would suggest to even drizzle some butterscotch syrup over that too.
I was a bit worried because I've never had cream soda before. But this was SO good. You can taste a slight hint of carbonation from the cream soda, and it has a strong sweet buttery flavor. Though to me, it almost tasted like egg-nog. I recommend not drinking it too slowly, since the ingredients tend to separate over time. But this is so good you won't have that problem.
I just wish I had some big goblets or something, to make me feel like I'm at The Leaky Cauldron or the Three Broomsticks. I'm such a nerd!

Thanks for reading!
Are you a Harry Potter fan? Would you try this recipe? Are there any other fictional foods or drinks you'd like to try?

The recipe I referenced was pinned by a user on Pinterest from a website called iheartnaptime.

Tickled Pink Lemonade Cookies

I'm writing my Friday post a bit early since I may not have time tomorrow. As I mentioned in my first Book Nook segment, I read a cute book called Red Velvet Cupcake Murder By Joanne Fluke. Yes, I realize I just called a book with the word murder in the title "cute". But it is!
Red Velvet Cupcake Murder!
The story is basically about a baker named Hannah Sweeten who bakes AND solves murders. And the best part is in every chapter Joanne Fluke puts recipes for all the food the character bakes! So, I decided to try one. I made the Tickled Pink Lemonade Cookies. I chose those because I love pink lemonade and it is the most unusual cookie recipe I have ever heard of.

Note: Though I am writing down the recipe, I have no ownership of it. This was Joanne Flukes recipe, I'm just sharing it because it's awesome!

Here's what you need for the cookies:
1/2 cup salted, softened butter.
1/2 cup white (granulated) sugar.
1/2 teaspoon baking powder.
1/4 teaspoon baking soda.
1 large egg, beaten.
1/3 cup frozen pink lemonade concentrate, thawed.
3 drops red food coloring.
1 & 3/4 cups all-purpose flour.
The cookie dough. It's so pink!
Mix the softened butter with the sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Mix in the baking powder and baking soda. Mix until they are well combined.
Mix in the egg and lemonade. Then add the food coloring.
Add the flour. The book says to add it a half-cup at a time, mixing with each addition.
Put on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
I baked mine a couple minutes longer -for like 14 minutes- because they still looked raw. But my stove is really old.
Here's what they look like!
They kind of look like piles of bubble gum. But they are so good.

Next is the frosting, you will need:
2 tbs salted butter, softened.
2 cups powdered sugar.
2 teaspoons pink lemonade concentrate, thawed.
3 or 4 teaspoons milk. I used 3 teaspoons for mine.
2 drops red food coloring.
The frosting. Yummy.
Mix the butter and powdered sugar together.
mix in the lemonade concentrate.
Mix in the milk a little at a time until the mixture is almost thin enough to spread.
Stir in the food coloring. Then frost the cookies!
Frosted pink lemonade cookies.
Here is my finished product. I was worried that they were going to be just too weird for me, but they were really delicious. The cookies have a strong pink lemonade flavor but the sugar tones it down, so it's not too tart. They also have the consistency of homemade sugar cookies. I would totally recommend them, especially in the summer. I ate mine with a glass of the left over pink lemonade. I may have a pink lemonade addiction now...
The recipe suggests trying regular lemonade also, which I want to try. I figure with the lemonade concentrate and some yellow food coloring the cookies will look really bright yellow and cute.

I wrote down some other recipes from the book I want to try. One is called Coffee and Cream Cookies, and you use real coffee. That should help my caffeine addiction... If it works out I'll post it here.

Thank for reading! If you try this recipe let me know how it went in the comments!

Book Nook

Vol.1

I have more free time now -yay!-, so I have more time to catch up on my reading. I love talking about books, and sharing books I really like, so I decided to make a segment on my blog all about books!
I've also seen other beauty bloggers do this and it looked fun.

I recently visited my local library and chose some books. The library is great for me to save money since book prices tend to be expensive lately. The best part is if I hate the book I can just bring it back without guilt. Also, this may be weird but I love old books.
And yes I own a Kindle, but it's not the same as curling up with a good solid book.

Here's what I got:
I love Miss Marple! She's like a mix of a grandmother and homicide detective!
I've borrowed this book before, but I was in school and really busy, so I didn't even read all of it. So I borrowed it again. Obviously the title gives it away, but it's all Agatha Christie's short stories involving Miss Marple.
I actually have no idea if I read this already. I've read so many Agatha Christie books that they are starting to blur together! So I guess I'll find out. It's also a Miss Marple murder mystery story.
I have never read this particular author's work before. But my love of red velvet cupcakes made me borrow this. The main character owns a bakery and solves murders. She's like a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Martha Stewart. And the best part is every chapter she shares recipes! As I write this I am testing one out. It is awesome! I will make a post on the recipe soon, I wont say which one, but it is PINK and yummy!

I will give my opinions on these books in my next Book Nook post.

Thanks for reading! If you've read any of these books let me know what you think in the comments.
