Tutorial Tuesday: Bows

Hey everyone! It's 1am here in the UK, and I just got in to bed and turned out the light, only to remember that I'd completely forgotten to do a tutorial tuesday! So the light is back on and I'm going to be super quick in writing this so I can go to sleep, second time around. This week's tutorial is for these glitter bow nails, which you might remember from here. This time I used a base of the gorgeous Shimmer Polish - Kim*, which you can see swatches of below. I'm going to include the rest of the post after the jump otherwise it might be too long!

Here I used 3 thin coats of Shimmer Polish - Kim, with 2 coats of Seche Vite topcoat.

And now for the tutorial:

Step 1: Paint your nails with a glitter base coat
Step 2: Using a brush, toothpick or dotting tool, paint the shape of a bow in a corresponding crème colour. (For instance, because the glitter is blue, the bow is blue too)
Step 3: Using a dotting tool, or a cut down toothpick, paint white dots on the bow shape
Step 4: Using a Black Barry M nail art pen, outline the bow shape. Start with the centre circle and then do the edges of the bow itself.
Step 5: Using the nail art pen again, draw the creases of the bow coming out from the centre
Step 6: Finish off with a topcoat to seal in your design and you’re done!

Tutorial Tuesday: Geometric Colour

Hey everyone! I'm back for another Tutorial Tuesday, although it's now technically Wednesday in the UK as it's 1am, it's still Tuesday in many other parts of the world, so hopefully it still counts! I'm so glad you all liked last week's tutorial so much, starting this off as a weekly thing seems to have been a good idea so far! Don't forget to check out my Tutorial tab to see all of my past tutorials and keep up to date. Anyway, today's tutorial is based on this design, which seemed to be a popular choice for tutorials. I've made the triangles a bit more centralised in this design, but the principle is the same and hopefully you will be able to translate it to look more like the original if you wish!

For these nails I used 3 coats of Shimmer Polish - Karen as a base, and then 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat. Unfortunately I can't seem to find Karen in the Shimmer Polish shop, but there are plenty of other fantastic glitters for you to have a nosy at!

Now for the tutorial! (Aka the reason you're all here)

You will need:
- A glitter base colour
- A small brush
- Top coat
- A multitude of different colours, I used:
·    Barry M – Blueberry
·    Barry M – Passion Fruit
·     Barry M – Mango
·    Barry M – Key Lime
·     Barry M – Prickly Pear
·     Barry M - Peach Melba
·    NYC - Lexington Yellow

Step 1: Paint your nails with a glitter base colour. When that is dry use a topcoat to smoothen out the surface for the next steps
Step 2: Using a thin brush (see previous picture) draw the outline of where you want your shapes to be, it’s best to do this colour by colour
Step 3: Fill in the gaps from the previous step
Step 4: Repeat the previous steps with each individual colour; be careful to leave a gap in-between each triangle so that your glitter base is still visible.
Step 5: Finish off with fast drying top coat to smoothen your design and to speed up drying time, and then you’re done!

4th of July Nails

Hey everyone! Many of you will know that I'm not American, so I wont be celebrating the 4th of July, and I've always felt that it would be a bit odd if I were to do 4th of July nails. However, after having seen many of my fellow British bloggers doing just that, I decided that it was time for me to jump on the bandwagon. I'm sure you're all getting sick of seeing 4th of July nails by now, but I really really wanted to use Nichole by Shimmer Polish, because I knew it would be absolutely perfect for this design.

For my thumb, middle finger and pinky finger I started with 3 thin coats of Shimmer - Nichole and then I applied one coat of Seche Vite, and then drew on the stars using the white Barry M nail art pen, finished off with another coat of Seche Vite

For the other fingers I started with a base of Barry M - White and then sponged on Shimmer Nicole, I stuck on these 3mm Stars from KKcentreHK, and topped it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite.

Shimmer Polish Swatches and Review

Hello everyone! I am so excited to show off these Shimmer Polish swatches. If you haven't found Shimmer Polish yet I say, "go, go now!" Or wait and see my swatches first so you're just as excited as I am!

Here are the polishes that came in my package. Aren't they lovely?? Yeah, I thought so too. You'll be able to tell by the amount of pictures I took. I'll save you all the loading time and put the rest of this post behind a cut. Continue through to the post because you do not want to miss these polishes!!

I decided to use undies with all of these to really show off the glitter. However, these polishes all have that perfect consistency that means they can certainly be built up and worn alone in just a few coats.

First up is Nichole, a beautiful mixture of silver, red, and blue glitter. In my mind it's an all-american kind of polish, reminding me of country girls, apple pie, and the 4th of July. A nice surprise is that some of the silver glitter in Nichole is holographic, adding a bit of mystery and glam. This is one coat of Nichole over Sephora by OPI Break A Leg Warmer!

Take a look at that glitter in this shadowed picture. I love the way it shines!

Mary is a red based polish with red, silver, and black glitter. This polish also sneakily replaces some of the silver glitter with holographic glitter. However, it's the black glitter that really catches my attention. I love black glitter! Below is one coat of Mary over China Glaze Adventure Red-y.

You may remember the above mani from Z in the ABC mani. Now you know the true beauty that lies beneath. :)

Jennifer is so, so gorgeous! I can't help but think of a mermaid seeing this color in the bottle, all shimmery iridescent scales. Jennifer has soft periwinkle blue glitter with a light sprinkling of pastel purple, and shimmery iridescent glitter. I layered it over Sephora by OPI Just A Little Dangerous.

This close up was taken with no top coat. It was a little rough, which is expected of glitters, but I was impressed. There was no curling what-so-ever and none of the glitter stuck up excessively!

Again, I tried to get a shadowed picture so you can really focus on the way Shimmer Polish really does shimmer and shine.

Jasmine is definitely my favorite of the bunch. Packed full of aquamarine glitter and a smattering of blue, green, red, silver, and an orangish-copper colored glitter. I used one coat over China Glaze Exotic Encounters and found them to be a perfect pair.

Last but not least is Lucie, a combo of red, silver, and a spattering of small iridescent glitters. I decided to layer it over China Glaze First Mate.

I've used holographic and iridescent to describe these polishes and some of you may be wondering what the different is. Well, in my mind holographic is a bright, harsh refection of light. It flares and sparks the light back in bright, vivid colors. While an iridescent is almost like seeing a holographic under water. It's softer and more dreamy in its reflection of light, much more muted in color.

The only thing left to say is that Shimmer really knows her polish. These glitters not only look stunning but the way they apply is mind-blowing! They were thick enough that there was no digging for glitter and no distasteful drips, but they spread around the nail so easily. There was no dabbing needed to get the glitter to leave the brush and no pushing to get it in place. I honestly felt like I was apply any professional grade creme polish instead of a glitter. It was like the best of both worlds.

If you are as enchanted by these polishes as I am, you can buy Shimmer Polish through Etsy or on the Shimmer website. You can also follow Shimmer on Facebook.

Z is for ...

And so ends the ABC Challenge. I am terribly sad to see this challenge over. I almost want to start all over again because there are so many letters that I had multiple nail art ideas for. Take Z for example. There's zebras, zombies, and zigzags and the one I went with:

Z is for ... Zippers

nails nailart nail art mani manicure polish Spellbound Lacquer ABC Challenge Z is for Zipper Zippers tutorial Shimmer Polish Mary black silver white red China Glaze Adventure Red-y L.A. LA Colors Circuits Energy Source Pure Ice Silver Mercedes glitter unzipped

I did this design completely backwards. I was working on swatching Shimmer Polish (swatches coming next week) when I was hit with the idea of zippers opening up to reveal Mary in all it's glittery glory.

I think it turned out pretty great considering I had to draw everything around that small V of Mary you see. To learn how to do a traditional zipper nail and not my backwards version you should definitely check out this picture tutorial found on Beautylish.

Will any of you be joining me for the Inspired by Time Periods Challenge??
